Gold membrane coaxes secrets out of surfaces

Using a special wafer-thin gold membrane, ETH researchers have made it significantly easier to study surfaces. The membrane makes it possible to measure properties of surfaces that are inaccessible to conventional methods.

The pores in the gold membrane developed by ETH researchers amplify the laser beam in Raman spectroscopy, allowing it to penetrate only into the surface (light grey) but not into the bulk of the material (dark grey). (Illustration: Scixel)
